St Columba’s College in St Albans has announced Karl Guest as the school's new Head.

He is currently Head of Alton School in Hampshire.

Karl will take up his duties at the co-educational independent Catholic school on 1st September 2023 but will be visiting and staying in touch throughout the next academic year.

Current Head David Buxton is stepping down from St Columba’s at the end of this academic year after 14 years at the helm.

David Shannon-Little will serve as Interim Head from Friday 8th July when the current term concludes.

Chair of the Board of Governors, Kevin McGovern said: "I am delighted to announce Karl’s appointment, and we are fortunate to have in David Shannon-Little a hugely experienced and able Interim Head."

Karl spent seven years as Deputy Head of Sydenham High School in London before taking up his first Headship at Alton School in April 2020.

He is a keen follower of sport and enjoys cooking, music and travelling.

St Columba's College has recently been recognised as fully compliant and ‘Excellent’ in all areas in its latest Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) report, which has just been published.

St Columba's College is an independent day school for boys and girls aged 4 to 18 in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Since 1939, the school has provided a Catholic education of 'Head and Heart' helping pupils to 'understand and embrace our values of Courage, Courtesy and Compassion, which are the cornerstone of a Columban education.' In 2021, the school began a phased transition to co-education by first welcoming girls into Reception, followed by all year groups in Lower Prep and the Lower Sixth Form.
