St Margaret's Preparatory School
St Margaret's Preparatory School is an independent day school for boys and girls aged 2 to 11 in Calne, Wiltshire. It occupies a leafy 27-acre campus which it shares with senior school, St Mary's Calne. The school has the aim of 'Inspiring Excellence' and achieves this through four key pillars which underpin a bespoke curriculum – Igniting Interests, Nurturing Individuality, Fostering Exploration, and Realising Potential.
- St Margaret's Preparatory School is a coed pre-prep and prep day school.
- The school welcomes approximately 150 pupils with boys and girls aged from 2 to 11 years.
- St Margaret's Preparatory School is located at Calne in Wiltshire.
Headmaster Luke Bromwich says: 'By ‘Inspiring Excellence’ we aim to instil a positive sense of self in each pupil and a drive to be the best that they can be in all respects. Our philosophy is underpinned by the belief that children thrive when they are happy, stimulated and encouraged.'
'We believe our duty is to prepare the children in our care to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world; to equip them with the life skills and attributes that will allow them to flourish in their senior schools and beyond.'
St Margaret’s is a small school, with a big heart. We offer a holistic and balanced education, underpinned by strong values.
Children at St Margaret’s have a wealth of opportunities to discover their passions, with a broad and rich curriculum, which often takes them outdoors and into nature, learning in the abundant space they have available to them. The school’s youngest learners also now have access to the school’s Early Years' Courtyard – a newly built outdoor learning space designed to ignite interests and inspire creativity.
Sharing a 28-acre site with St Mary’s Calne gives St Margaret’s pupils access to extended facilities that not many other standalone prep schools can boast, such as multiple sports pitches, a 25m indoor swimming pool, a climbing wall and science labs.
Our moto of ‘Inspiring Excellence’ underpins all that we do – from Forest School sessions, to robotics and coding, residential trips such as sailing on the Isle of Wight, to exploring our local area, rich in Neolithic history, to our pupils’ performances on stage and their tenacity and humility on the sports pitch – our pupils adopt a ‘have-a-go’ attitude, they are happy in their learning and they are proud of their school.
We encourage prospective parents to visit and see first-hand what we offer. As well as our Open Events, we offer weekly ‘Walk and Talk’ tours with Mr Bromwich, which can be arranged by contacting the school.
Head, Governance and Inspections
When reviewing details about a particular school, prospective parents should always ensure they have looked at the governance details, reviewed recent inspections and read about the Head's vision for the school. Find out more about how to read an inspection report, the role of the Head (and whether you need to like him or her!), the school's pastoral care provision, looking at what is taught through the curriculum and assessing the extracurricular opportunities on offer.

Alex Hopkins was appointed Head of St Margaret's Prep in September 2024, having been Deputy Head Academic at the school for the past four years.
