Tom Gregory

Few Heads can claim a personal connection to their school like Tom Gregory of St Andrew's Prep. As a former pupil, he has come back to his old school to lead it into the future and talks to Attain about its ethos.
"Having been a pupil here myself, I experienced firsthand the warmth, encouragement and opportunities that define this school."

Schools always like to welcome back former pupils but it's very rare they become the Head of their old school. For Tom Gregory, this became a reality in 2021, taking up the role of Headmaster at the school he once attended as a child, St Andrew's Prep.

'My journey to leading St Andrew's Prep is deeply personal,' explains Tom. 'Having been a pupil here myself, I experienced firsthand the warmth, encouragement and opportunities that define this school. Returning as Headmaster allows me to give back to the community that shaped me and to lead with a deep understanding of our values and traditions.'

Tom didn't begin his career in education but worked in investment banking in the City of London. He left to follow his passion for teaching and has worked at several schools over the last 18 years including Framlingham College Prep, Vinehall, and Ashfold Prep.

Tom has a deep personal connection to the school's values and spirt. 'I am inspired daily by the children, staff, and families who make this school a vibrant and special place,' he says. 'I must admit, digging through the school archive and spotting my own rather embarrassing photos, and those of my family members, is a reminder of just how long I have been connected to St Andrew’s and how wonderfully the school leaves a lasting impression!'

Tom's passion for a school which has been such a big part of his life for so long is clear. But as well as the nostalgia, he has a very clear vision for how the school should develop into the future. 'At St Andrew’s Prep, our vision is to provide a nurturing environment where every child is known, valued, and encouraged to flourish,' he explains. 'We aim to cultivate curiosity, creativity, and compassion, ensuring that our pupils are not only academically accomplished but also kind and honest individuals who give their best and demonstrate their own excellence. Our commitment to a holistic education is reflected in our emphasis on academic achievement, co-curricular opportunity, and strong pastoral care, all set within our beautiful coastal setting.'

Of course, St Andrew's is part of the foundation of Eastbourne College and many pupils each year transition on to the neighbouring senior school. St Andrew's prepares them academically for this move but for Tom, this responsibility goes beyond knowledge. 'When pupils leave St Andrew’s Prep, they depart as well-rounded individuals equipped with the skills and character to thrive in the next stage of their education and beyond. Our pupils demonstrate leadership, empathy, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning. They are confident in their abilities, compassionate towards others, and ready to contribute positively to the world around them.'
