Nick Milbank has worked at Cheam for 25 years, starting as a Form Tutor. He was appointed Head in January 2025. 'I have been deeply enthused by those who came before me; leaders who have shaped the school's history and left a lasting legacy,' he explains. 'The chance to positively impact pupils, staff and parents is what drives me. Leadership is about being brave and using your skills to help others grow and thrive. It's about creating an environment where everyone can reach their potential and feel supported along the way.'

After spending so long at Cheam, Nick is very fond of the school. 'My drive to lead Cheam is rooted in my wish to inspire and contribute to the continued success of a very special school,' he says. 'My vision for Cheam is to create a truly happy environment where every child can flourish. Happiness is key: it builds confidence which serves as the cornerstone for self-esteem and success. I believe that when children feel happy, valued and safe, they are best positioned to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.'

Cheam is a school which values its community and Nick's vision for the school puts this at its heart. 'I want to invest in creating a culture where pupils, staff and parents alike feel valued and supported. Cheam should continue to grow and evolve, embracing innovation and progress, but without ever losing the essence of what makes it special: the DNA of a family-oriented, caring school where each individual is known and nurtured.'

'Ultimately, the key to this vision lies in people. While beautiful buildings and facilities provide an inspiring backdrop, it is the wonderful people – the staff, the pupils and the broader community – who make a school exceptional. My goal is to foster a community that celebrates and supports one another, ensuring that Cheam remains a place where everyone can shine.'

As a prep school, Cheam aims to fully prepare pupils for the next stage of their academic journey. For Nick, the school's aim is ensure pupils develop confidence whilst also cultivating 'the courage to be brave and approach the world with a spirited and optimistic outlook.' He wants them to leave with good manners, strong values and a belief in their own potential. 'When pupils leave Cheam, I hope they carry with them an inner confidence not just in their achievements but in who they have become,' he explains.

'They should feel a genuine sense of accomplishment and know they were valued by others during their time at Cheam. This understanding of self-worth and the importance of their skills will be vital as they transition to their senior schools and beyond. Above all, my greatest hope is that they leave Cheam feeling truly happy, equipped with the resilience and character to embrace the next stage of their journey with confidence and joy.'
