"Every child is not only known but deeply understood. Our children embody curiosity, compassion and confidence."
'It's a rare privilege to lead Barrow Hills and to help shape the values, character, and futures of our pupils here,' says Head John Towers. 'I have such confidence in our mission to nurture happy, curious, and civic-minded individuals. I hold high expectations that our pupils will strive not only to do well but also to do good, whether during their time here at Barrow Hills, when they progress to their senior schools, and beyond during their University studies and careers.'
John became Head of Barrow Hills in 2023 and has over 30 years experience in both the independent and state sector. 'I'd been fortunate to lead a couple of outstanding schools in London and was looking for something truly special for my third headship,' he says. 'Approaching Barrow Hills through its lovely grounds on a bright autumn day raised high hopes and being able to spend time with the children and staff here completely won me over. There was a palpable sense of genuine care, with every child truly known and valued. The added dimension of being part of the historic Bridewell Royal Hospital foundation brought an extra spark, offering a range of additional resource and collaborative opportunities rarely available to a prep school.'
The school's woodland location offers a number of benefits for pupils. 'Through forest school, ecology studies, or sports, I aim to get children outside – active, adventurous, and immersed in nature – as they thrive in the beautiful surroundings we take full advantage of at Barrow Hills,' John explains. 'In the coming years, we will continue to broaden our horizons by embracing the knowledge and cultural capital necessary to maintain our high academic and pastoral standards.'
John is very proud of the pupils who are Barrow Hills' greatest ambassadors. 'Consistent feedback from visitors – whether parents, academics, governors, or inspectors – highlights the palpable warmth and kindness in our children,' he explains. 'I expect our pupils to have excellent manners and a strong ethical understanding of their place in the world, having actively participated in charitable or community endeavours. Above all, they will value good relationships and understand the virtue of real community. Most importantly, they will have formed strong friendships – many of which will last a lifetime.'
John believes children simply flourish at Barrow Hills – academically, socially and emotionally. 'From our youngest learners in Nursery brimming with wonder, growth and curiosity, through to our courteous, sociable and responsible children at the top of the school, life here is full and productive,' he says.
'We balance the rigour of broad and deep academic outcomes with a consistent and supportive system of pastoral care. Every child is not only known but deeply understood. Our children embody curiosity, compassion and confidence. They are encouraged to think critically, embrace challenges and celebrate diversity in all its forms. Our children are not just learners – they are leaders in the making, prepared to shine in every aspect of life.'
