Pastoral care

Shiplake prides itself on delivering outstanding pastoral care which is built upon the House system. There are five core Houses, run by a Housemaster or Housemistress who is always available to offer support across all areas of pupil welfare. Pupils are known individually and join a House from Year 9 onwards. The Houses are a significant part of Shiplake life, and pupils quickly form a sense of togetherness and spirit. The College has established structures to monitor academic and social progression and all aspects of development are discussed with parents, including through reports and parents' conferences.

Extracurricular

Sport is a key part of life at Shiplake College. With extensive grounds, pupils have the perfect setting for sports fixtures and the College also enjoys easy access to its own stretch of the River Thames. Although Shiplake is 'relatively small in terms of pupil numbers, we have a reputation for 'punching above our weight' across various sports'. In addition, Shiplake offers a wide range of co-curricular oppportunities as well as 'music for all' enabling all pupils in Years 7 and 8 to enjoy free lessons on a range of orchestral instruments. Drama is offered at both GCSE and A Level and pupils have sole use of the Tithe Barn Theatre at the College. Shiplake also boasts a very wide range of clubs and societies for pupils to enjoy, as well as outdoor education, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and Combined Cadet Force (CCF). From archery to podcast club and photography to yoga club, there is an activitiy on offer to inspire every pupil.

Shiplake College

Ethos

Three key values underpin Shiplake's ethos: Inclusive, Individual and Inspirational. All pupils are 'valued regardless of academic prowess, artistic flair or sporting ability, with opportunities for all to join in and try new things'. As a small community, every boy and girl becomes extremely well known to their Housemaster or Housemistress and personal tutor. Shiplake 'recognise and respect that every individual is unique, and thus their greatest talents lie in various fields'. And finally, the College's environment 'encourages pupils to take inspiration from their teachers, their surroundings, and each other; stimulating all areas of personal development'. Together, these three key value define the unique culture of Shiplake College.

Everything we do at Shiplake we try to base on our three core values, known as the Three i's - Inclusive, Individual, Inspirational.

We're inclusive! A school of just over 500 pupils with boys from Year 7 to 13, girls in the sixth form and soon to have girls in Year 7 from 2023. Everyone matters, we're a community and, above all, we are kind to each other. There are countless opportunities for all to opt in, be involved and try new things.

Individual. We recognise and respect that you're all different and thank goodness for that. This is a personal best school and whatever your academic prowess, artistic flair, or sporting ability, we aim to get the very best out of every single pupil. With small class sizes and such an array of sports and co-curricular activities it gives us a really good chance of achieving this.

And finally, inspirational. We have amazing teachers, whose mission is to inspire young people. We have an amazing setting along with superb facilities. And most importantly, pupils inspire each other. We want to instil in our young people a strong and true sense of ambition and aspiration.
