Dragon School is a co-educational boarding and day prep school in Oxford for boys and girls aged 4 to 13. The Dragon is a happy, vibrant school where children enjoy a wealth of opportunities to discover and develop their talents in the classroom and beyond.

About the school

The Dragon is a co-educational day and boarding school which has offered a unique educational experience to generations of pupils since it was founded in 1877.  The distinctive approach encourages enquiry, confidence and enthusiasm. The beautiful campus on the River Cherwell and dedicated Pre-Prep in Summer Town are within walking distance of the centre of the oldest University city in the land.

The breadth of intellectual and philosophical challenge underpins an expansive academic curriculum, a wonderful programme of sport and an extraordinarily creative programme of music, drama and art. The Dragon QUEST enrichment curriculum on Saturday mornings has broadened opportunities yet further with children able to choose from a wide variety of activities - ranging from paddle boarding to polo and ancient civilisation to community service. Superb specialist facilities, first-class teaching and plenty of space for both sport and play allow each child to develop their unique gifts and talents.

“It has been wonderful to see our children enjoy all aspects of Dragon life, grow in confidence and make incredible friendships. Choosing the Dragon was the best decision we could have made.” Parents

The Dragon prides itself on providing a safe and happy environment in which to learn.  With an informality that builds trust and allows children to develop a sense of responsibility and respect for others, pupils are helped to become well-rounded, confident, independent and motivated – all the attributes they will need to become socially adept and emotionally intelligent adults. Boarding at the Dragon begins from age 8, in small, family run boarding houses and families can opt for full, weekly or flexi boarding. There is a Sunday evening Dragon bus from central London.

The quality of pupils’ achievements and learning is exceptional” Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI)

Dragons go onto a vast range of senior schools, notably Eton, St. Edward's Oxford, Winchester, Wycombe Abbey, Radley, Cheltenham Ladies College, Rugby, Harrow, Marlborough, Wellington, Oundle, Magdalen College School, Headington and many more.  Preparatory years at the Dragon lay the firm foundations of a successful education at senior schools in the UK and beyond.

Former pupils are known as Old Dragons and there is a strong alumni network. Eminent Dragons have had successes in a wide variety of fields and famous names include Sir John Betjeman, Emma Watson, Tom Hiddleston and Tim Henman.

The Dragon isn’t just the education we wanted for our children, more importantly it’s the childhood we wanted for them too.” Parents

“I believe that the happiness and wellbeing of our pupils and teachers is the key to excellent achievement, with every individual feeling understood and valued. Here at the Dragon, day and boarding pupils, overseas pupils and those living closer to home are all nurtured and cared for as individuals. At the Dragon, friendships are made and lessons learned that will last a lifetime." Crispin Hyde-Dunn, Headmaster
